In 1994, organized by a Stanford anthropology graduate student, Jim Mason, 10
master carvers from the Middle Sepik River Region of Papua New Guinea came
to Stanford to bring the New Guinea aesthetic to the United States. Passerbys
began to take notice as the carvers worked under a grove of trees on the Stanford
campus. As word spread, crowds gathered for weekly potlucks to enjoy the live
art, share stories, dance, and sing. While it’s too late to see the excellent form of
the carvers themselves, you can enjoy the beautiful form of their art. Enjoy a quiet
meditative walk amongst the carvings by day or by night as the spotlights
illuminate them.

Located in San Francisco, this quirky museum houses dozens of toy gadgets and
old arcade games. Tour the museum with an eye for the “body-mechanical”
integrity of the toys: they hinge at the hips, their chests have dome-like contours,
their heads balance evenly on their torsoes, and their limbs move freely without
compromise to their baseline shape.
